It's a new convert's first outward sign of obediance towards God. It also signifies membership into a New Testament Church. Baptism is not optional, it's a command from the Lord.
It is also a picture of what a believer believes about his salvation: that Jesus died, was buried and rose again the third day-baptism pictures this: in going down into the water, we picture Jesus' burial, and coming out of the water, it pictures His resurrection. This is why its also important HOW one is baptized, that the form must be correct, not just a sprinkle.
